Librarians have adapted to the high unemployment rate and the need for people to search for jobs online and apply for jobs online. The Internet is necessary to apply for more and more jobs in today's market but not everybody is connected and not everybody has the know-how to use the resources the Internet provides. Librarians teach patrons how to navigate the web and mine through the vast amounts of information the web provides. Without libraries and librarians, how many people would not have been able to apply for a job in 2010? Libraries are the tools and librarians provide the guidance necessary to effectively use those tools. They have proven to be crucial to the reconstruction of economic stability.
The American Library Association (ALA) conducts studies to tract library usage around the country. The trends in the type of services that libraries and librarians provide changes constantly depending on the needs of the community. Some of the services provided assist patrons with finding and applying for jobs, applying to colleges, finding government assistance, seeking medical advice and connecting with the community. Libraries are a hub of information and create avenues for individuals to attain resources to better their quality of life.
